| Situation | 817 Squadron (817 Sqn) is an active helicopter squadron equipped with Westland
Sea King Mk 50 helicopters. 817 Sqn is a land based squadron operating from Naval
Air Station (NAS) Nowra. The Sqn provides the RAN with Fleet Utility Support such
as Search and Rescue, Surveillance, and Air and ground crew training. A major challenge for 817 Sqn over the next two years is to maintain capability and motivation while simultaneously de-commissioning the remaining helicopters. This leadership challenge requires the leaders of 817 Sqn to manage change, prepare for personnel reductions and associated emotions, actively communicate up and down the chain of command as well as across sections, and understand how to align individual behaviour with the wider picture of the Sqn. |
| Challenge | To deliver a leadership development program equipping approximately 40 personnel ranging in rank from SNCO to Lieutenant. with a set of skills to maintain the quality of capability required by the RAN during the gradual de-commissioning of the helicopters. |
| Response | Development and delivery of a 12 month program addressing leadership skills such as motivation, communication and leadership styles. This seven workshop program uses a range of cognitive techniques to challenge participants to reflect on their work behaviours and outcomes. The program is being evaluated using a series of well validated measures for health and well being, resilience, and leadership effectiveness. |
| Outcome | This is an ongoing program with final results due at end 2010. |
