Situation IP Australia engaged O2C to create a new model for the Senior Leadership Team (SLT). Previously, senior leaders gathered to receive information from the SLT - this forum traditionally provided an opportunity for the executive group to impart information from above.
Challenge The executive group recognised that the strategic direction the organisation required a different model of leadership from the senior leadership group. The previous top down approach would not fit with the strategic direction and a more open and inclusive style would engender the necessary behaviours and action to achieve the vision.
Response The O2C facilitation team utilised a number of methods and techniques to challenge the SLT to think, to identify key issues and to explore challenges and opportunities in the process of moving towards this new identity and new leadership model. These methods included:
  • Visualisation: Through the Looking Glass required the SLT to identify possibilities and futures without constraints and limitations. This technique enables people to look beyond current problems and identify and create their own futures. This is the first step in establishing what the SLT wants to be.
  • Emotions. A number of sessions including Anything Goes, The Great Race, and the initial presentation challenged the SLT to consider their feelings in relation to the activity. Emotions are what drive and motivate people to achieve, think and behave in certain ways. In changing the nature of the SLT, awareness of and responding to emotions will be vital to engage and maintain momentum.
  • Clearing Negativity. The initial presentation enabled participants an opportunity to "get things off their chest" as one participant explained. Identifying and dealing with potentially problematic energies generated by emotions and thought processes is essential to the re-energising process.
Outcome O2C provided a final report on the activity that outlined the values, behaviours and actions identified during the activity. The evaluation highlighted that participants' had substantially increased their understanding of strategic issues, improved their motivation and could identify relevant steps to building an effective SLT.
