| Situation |
Primary Care Practice Support (PCPS) is a branch of Primary and Ambulatory care Division within the
Department of Health and Ageing. Primary care is generally an individual's first point of contact with
the health system. This includes general practice and other community based health services. There are
approximately 50 people within the Branch. A considerable amount of changes currently impact upon the
Branch including structural and organisational health reforms and potential geographical dislocation. |
| Challenge |
The workshop provided participants with an introduction to emotional intelligence as the basis for
preparing to deal with situational and environmental changes. The key outcomes were to:
- IDENTIFICATION. Participants have an opportunity to identify and discuss the real issues behind their emotions and behaviours
- BUILD STRATEGIES. Staff develop individual and workplace focussed strategies to address areas of concern.
- TEAM DEVELOPMENT. A series of activities to foster their participation within their team.

| Response |
The O2C facilitation team provided a workshop for staff to gain awareness of emotional intelligence
and how to develop skills from this knowledge. The workshop covered the seven dimensions of emotional
intelligence, brief history, useful strategies and ways to inculcate awareness into application. Practical
exercises, reflective work and personal feedback were some of the activities used within the workshop. |
| Outcome |
The workshop produced the following outcomes for the branch:
- Opportunities to develop awareness of emotional intelligence
- Ability to apply strategies for building resilience through emotional intelligence.
- Environment to develop group and team understanding of what is needed to combat issues around change.
