Situation Specialist Ships identified that branch personnel were under pressure, highly stressed and there was some evidence of increases in physical and mental health issues.
Challenge O2C were engaged to analyse the situation and provide a program to address the issues in a systematic fashion.
Response This program addresses the need to improve the wellbeing of managers and staff, reduce the cost to business through improving wellbeing and resilience of individual workers, and add to the evidence base around workplace and organisational resilience. Each phase had the following outcome objectives:

Phase 1 Executive Training (Organisational Resilience)
  • build an executive level understanding of factors that affect organisational resilience; and
  • identify in consultation with the executive, the focus of a Specialist Ships Resilience Program
Phase 2 Resilience Program Development
  • develop a program that will provide both proactive and ameliorative support to the Branch in building resilience; and
  • after customisation, confirm with the executive that the proposed program addresses the objectives identified as part of the Organisational Resilience Executive Training.
Phase 3 Resilience Program Rollout
  • undertake initial data gathering to build a baseline of resilience within the organisation; and
  • deliver the targeted initiatives which are designed to improve resilience within the organisation.
Phase 4 Resilience Program Monitoring
  • monitor the initiatives that have been implemented to determine the level of improvement that is achieved through the Program rollout activity.
Outcome The program was evaluated using both self rated participant surveys and psychometrically validated tools. An On-line survey tool was utilised to distribute the General Health Questionnaire 12, Genos EI Multi-rater assessment, and Warrs' Job-related Affective Wellbeing Scale. On-line surveys were conducted Pre and Post the intervention. The statistical results from the program demonstrated.
  • Up to 12% decrease in workforce psychological distress
  • Up to 5% increase in Resilience
  • 21% decrease in Personal Stigma towards people suffering a mental illness
  • Statistically significant increase in positive statements on Job Competency and Non-Job Competency on the Job-related Affective Wellbeing Scale
  • 80% of participants agreed the program had helped in their professional life and 87% agreed the program had helped them adopt more helpful behaviours during challenging times.
