| Situation |
ADFA engaged O2C to conduct an annual leadership retreat for 60 key staff. The
retreat provided a forum for the welcoming and induction of new staff into the
nuances of the ADFA environment. |
| Challenge |
The retreat needed to be focused to enable key staff to adjust to the ADFA staff
climate via building on organisational strengths identified in past retreats. This is
needed to take into account the significant cultural differences between the academic
and military staff at the Academy. |
| Response |
The techniques used during the facilitation included speed dating, appreciative
inquiry, positive emotions and world café. The focus of the program was on the
following factors.
- Development of team dynamics.
- Verbal presentations are based on be seen be quick be gone principle.
- Experiential activities reinforce appreciative inquiry.
- Focus on construction of what we want rather than destruction of what exists.
- Report summarising outcomes provided at end of retreat.
- Commandant and Rector integrated into the ADFA community.
- To have fun!

| Outcome |
O2C provided a final report on the activity that included a distinctive action plan
deriving from an analysis of the issues, concerns and ideas raised during the retreat.
An evaluation highlighted that the outcomes of the retreat were above the expectations
of participants and that the strengths of the activity were the team building and the
high level of experiential learning. |
